Understanding Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Sexually transmitted diseases, commonly called STDs, are diseases that are spread by having sex with someone who has an STD. You can get a sexually transmitted disease from sexual activity that involves the mouth, anus, vagina, or penis.

According to the American Social Health Organization, one out of four teens in the United States becomes infected with an STD each year. By the age of 25, half of all sexually active young adults will get an STD.

Types of STDs

Some STDs, like HIV, cannot be cured and are deadly. By learning more, you can find ways to protect yourself from the following STDs:

  • Genital herpes
  • Human papillomavirus/Genital warts
  • Hepatitis B
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea ("Clap")

Symptoms of STDs

Sometimes, there are no symptoms of STDs. If symptoms are present, they may include one or more of the following:

  • Bumps, sores, or warts near the mouth, anus, penis, or vagina
  • Swelling or redness near the penis or vagina
  • Skin rash
  • Painful urination
  • Weight loss, loose stools, night sweats
  • Aches, pains, fever, and chills
  • Yellowing of the skin (jaundice)
  • Discharge from the penis or vagina (vaginal discharge may have an odor)
  • Bleeding from the vagina other than during a monthly period
  • Painful sex
  • Severe itching near the penis or vagina

How Do I Know If I Have an STD?

Talk to your doctor. He or she can examine you and perform tests to determine if you have an STD. Treatment can:

  • Cure many STDs
  • Lessen the symptoms of STDs
  • Make it less likely that you will spread the disease
  • Help you to get healthy and stay healthy

How Are STDs Treated?

Many STDs are treated with antibiotics. If you are given an antibiotic to treat an STD, it's important that you take all of the drug, even if the symptoms go away. Also, never take someone else's medicine to treat your illness. By doing so, you may make it more difficult to diagnose and treat the infection. Likewise, you should not share your medicine with others. Some doctors, however, may provide additional antibiotics to be given to your partner so that you can be treated at the same time.

How Can I Protect Myself From STDs?

Here are some basic steps to protect yourself from STDs:

  • Abstain from sex or sexual relations as the only sure way to prevent STDs
  • Use a latex condom every time you have sex (ensure it is water-based if you use a lubricant)
  • Limit your number of sexual partners
  • Practice monogamy (having sex with only one person who has sex only with you)
  • Choose your sex partners carefully and avoid those who may have an STD
  • Get checked for STDs regularly
  • Avoid alcohol or drugs before sex as they may impair your judgment
  • Know the signs and symptoms of STDs and watch for them in yourself and your partners
  • Educate yourself about STDs to better protect yourself

How Can I Avoid Spreading an STD?

If you have an STD:

  • Stop having sex until you see a doctor and are treated
  • Follow your doctor's instructions for treatment
  • Use condoms whenever you have sex, especially with new partners
  • Do not resume having sex unless your doctor says it's okay
  • Return to your doctor for rechecks
  • Ensure your sex partner or partners are also treated

What are Smile Lines?

Smile Lines, also known as Nasolabial folds, are the smile or laughter lines that form between the corner of the nose and the angle of the mouth. These folds separate the cheeks from the upper lip and generally become more pronounced as a person ages.

Treatments for Smile Lines

At the Smile Lines NYC Treatment Center in New York, NY, we use dermal fillers to effectively reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds. Our center is open 7 days a week for treatment.

Our eminent Cosmetic Dermatologist, Dr. Gary Rothfeld, provides state-of-the-art facilities, enabling patients to enjoy a comfortable and welcoming environment throughout their treatment. Dr. Rothfeld is a fully accredited, board-certified dermatologist with years of experience in using injectable dermal fillers to deliver stunning results.

Benefits of Dermal Filler Treatments for Nasolabial Folds

Dermal fillers can successfully revolumise areas that have lost volume (often due to aging), significantly reducing or removing the appearance of nasolabial folds, which can make a face look tired and old. These non-permanent dermal fillers offer a non-invasive and cost-effective alternative to cosmetic surgery for correcting volume loss due to facial aging, with a proven safety record. The results achieved using dermal fillers for treating nasolabial folds (Smile Lines) are stunning and natural-looking.

Types of Dermal Filler Treatments

We use a range of hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, which are non-permanent and typically last for six to 12 months. The hyaluronic acid in these dermal fillers is produced biosynthetically by bacterial fermentation. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found throughout your body, giving volume to the skin, lubricating the joints, and shaping the eyes.

We also use longer-lasting calcium hydroxylapatite Radiesse fillers. Radiesse is a unique dermal filler made from synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres in a water-based gel carrier. It is 100% biocompatible, so no allergy testing is required before use. Radiesse is biodegradable and will gradually break down and be absorbed by your body, with results typically lasting for 12 months or longer in many patients.

All our dermal filler options have a proven safety record and are fully approved for use in the United States.

Non-Surgical Skin Tightening

At Park Avenue Dermatology and Non-Surgical Rejuvenation Center, we offer the most advanced non-surgical skin tightening treatments to rejuvenate your appearance and restore your skin's youthful firmness. Our techniques are designed to target the deeper layers of the skin where collagen breakdown occurs, providing long-lasting and natural-looking results.

Understanding Your Skin

Your facial skin consists of three primary layers:

  1. Epidermis: The visible outer layer.
  2. Dermis: The collagen-rich middle layer.
  3. Subcutaneous Layer: The inner layer, also known as the fat layer, which contains a web of collagen fibers.

As you age, the collagen in these layers can deteriorate due to factors such as sun exposure, genetics, and the natural aging process. This leads to sagging and wrinkling. Surface treatments alone cannot effectively restore collagen in these deeper layers.

Our Non-Surgical Treatments

Thermage Skin Tightening

Thermage is a cutting-edge, non-invasive procedure that tightens and rejuvenates your skin's collagen in all three layers. Utilizing Capacitive Radiofrequency (CRF) technology, Thermage safely heats the deeper layers of your skin, causing an immediate tightening effect and stimulating new collagen growth over the following months. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and requires just one session for optimal results.

The Thermage Procedure

  • Performed in-office: Administered by Thermage-certified professionals.
  • Duration: Typically 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the treatment area.
  • Comfort: A brief heating sensation is felt during the procedure, indicating collagen stimulation. Light pain medication may be offered to ensure comfort.
  • No downtime: Resume your daily activities immediately.
  • Results: Immediate tightening and smoothing, with continued improvements over 4-6 months.

FAQs

  1. What is the Thermage procedure? Thermage is a non-invasive treatment that tightens and contours the skin by stimulating collagen production. It requires no downtime and results improve over several months.

  2. How does it work? The procedure heats deep collagen fibers while protecting the skin's surface, causing immediate tightening and new collagen production.

  3. How long does it take? Between 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the treatment area.

  4. How many treatments are needed? Typically, only one treatment is required.

  5. When will I see results? Immediate results are visible, with continued improvements over 2-6 months.

  6. What areas can be treated?

    • Periorbital region (forehead and around the eyes)
    • Mid/Lower face (cheeks, mouth area, jawline, jowls, under the chin)
    • Full face
  7. Is it safe? Thermage has an excellent safety record with minimal side effects.

ReFirme Skin Tightening

ReFirme uses the elos technology, combining Bi-Polar Radio Frequency and Light energies to heat connective tissue, stimulate collagen production, and firm loose skin. It's a comfortable, quick procedure with no downtime, suitable for all skin types.

Is ReFirme Right for You?

  • Safe for all skin types: Elos technology ensures comfort and safety.
  • Results: Gradual improvement over the course of treatments.
  • Comfort: No need for topical anesthetics; the procedure is virtually painless.

Skin Tags on Eyelids: Expert Removal Services in NYC

Comprehensive Treatment for Skin Tags on Eyelids

Skin tags are benign, small, thin skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body, including the eyelids. While they are generally harmless, many people find them cosmetically displeasing. The Skin Tags Eyelid NYC Treatment Center in New York, NY, offers specialized solutions for removing these growths with exceptional results.

Effective Treatment Options

Several effective methods are available for removing skin tags:

  • Cryotherapy (Freezing): Skin tags are frozen with liquid nitrogen, causing them to fall off. This method is quick but may require multiple sessions.
  • Electrosurgery: Tags are burned off using electric cautery or a Hyfrecator, which is highly recommended for its precision and effectiveness.
  • Scissor Removal: Skin tags are cut off using medical scissors, often without anesthesia for small tags. Larger tags may require local anesthesia (lidocaine) or topical anesthesia cream (Betacaine or LMX 5%) to minimize discomfort.

Advantages and Risks

  • Scissor Removal: Provides immediate results, though minor bleeding is a potential risk. For larger tags or those in sensitive areas, local anesthesia is used to ensure comfort.
  • Freezing and Burning: These methods might lead to temporary skin discoloration, need for repeat treatments, or failure of the tag to completely detach. There is no evidence suggesting that removing skin tags leads to more growths; however, some individuals may be predisposed to developing new tags periodically.

Personalized Care by Dr. Gary Rothfeld

Dr. Gary Rothfeld, a Board-Certified Dermatologist with over 20 years of experience, personally handles every patient at the Skin Tags Eyelid NYC Treatment Center.   Skin of Color Treatment Center in Manhattan: Premier Dermatology for Pigmented Skin

Tailored Dermatology for Ethnic Skin

At the Skin of Color Treatment Center in Manhattan, we address the unique dermatological needs of patients with pigmented skin. Dr. Gary Rothfeld, a renowned Board-Certified Cosmetic Dermatologist, specializes in the comprehensive care and treatment of skin issues affecting African-American, Hispanic, Indian, and Asian individuals.

Expertise in Ethnic Skin

Ethnic skin contains the same number of melanocytes as Caucasian skin but has a higher concentration of melanosomes, which produce melanin—the pigment responsible for skin color. These melanosomes are larger and more dispersed throughout the epidermis, contributing to the skin's rich and intense hue. Due to denser collagen fibers and fibroblasts in the dermis, aging processes tend to occur later in pigmented skin.

Dr. Rothfeld explains that while ethnic skin is naturally resilient and well-adapted to sun exposure, it can suffer from specific conditions like acne and pigmentation disorders. Acne, for instance, may not be more common in ethnic skin but tends to cause more noticeable damage and pigmentation issues, leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Dos and Don’ts for Ethnic Skin

Ethnic skin is adept at self-hydration and sun protection, akin to an internal air-conditioning system. However, in colder, drier climates, this natural protection can diminish, resulting in a loss of radiance and a dull appearance.

Dr. Rothfeld advises against regular, harsh exfoliation, which may harm ethnic skin. Gentle exfoliation and occasional peeling masks are acceptable, but it's crucial to use products specifically designed for pigmented skin. Additionally, certain laser treatments may not be suitable and can potentially cause permanent depigmentation. Consulting a specialist is essential to determine the safest and most effective treatment options.

Personalized Care with Dr. Gary Rothfeld

Dr. Rothfeld takes pride in offering personalized care to each patient. He personally oversees every treatment, ensuring the highest level of care and attention. His approach, rooted in detailed medical history and physical examination, contrasts with the trend towards impersonal cosmetic procedures often seen in dermatology today.

As a "Doctor's Doctor," Dr. Rothfeld is chosen by his peers for personal care, reflecting his commitment to excellence. He emphasizes the importance of understanding each patient’s unique needs and tailoring treatments accordingly.

Comprehensive Dermatology Services

At our center, we offer a wide range of services, from advanced cosmetic dermatology to surgical rejuvenation. Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment in NYC

Understanding Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition characterized by scaly, inflamed skin, primarily in oily areas such as the scalp, face, and other terminal-haired regions. Although not infectious, seborrheic dermatitis can lead to temporary hair loss if present on the scalp or other areas with terminal hair.

Symptoms and Causes

Seborrheic dermatitis manifests as itchy, painful skin with a scaly, sometimes oily appearance. It is believed to be triggered by the overproduction of sebum by sebaceous glands, which contains higher levels of triglycerides and cholesterol. Factors such as hormonal changes, stress, and genetics, particularly among those of Celtic descent, can exacerbate this condition.

 Treatment Options

  1. Medicated Shampoos: Specialized anti-dandruff shampoos can control scaling and inflammation. Options include those with tar, pyrithione, selenium sulfide, or salicylic acid.

Topical Treatments: Corticosteroid creams and antifungal agents like ciclopirox or ketoconazole can help manage inflammation and yeast proliferation, a key factor in seborrheic dermatitis.

  2. Personalized Care: Dr. Gary Rothfeld provides comprehensive, individualized treatment plans to address your specific condition, ensuring optimal outcomes.

Why Choose Dr. Gary Rothfeld?

World-Class Sculptra Treatment Center in NYC | Dr. Gary Rothfeld at 629 Park Ave

The Leading Choice for Sculptra Treatments

Sculptra Aesthetic is a revolutionary injectable filler designed for cosmetic use, offering long-lasting and natural-looking results. Originally approved for HIV-positive patients experiencing facial fat loss, Sculptra has since become a top choice for those seeking to address facial volume loss and signs of aging.

Why Choose Sculptra?

Sculptra stands out from other dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvederm in several key ways:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Sculptra is ideal for filling larger, more diffuse facial areas rather than targeting specific lines or wrinkles.
  • Gradual, Natural Results: Unlike fillers that

provide immediate results, Sculptra works gradually, with improvements developing over time. This process leads to more natural-looking results that can last up to 25 months, as evidenced by clinical trials.

Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid and is typically administered in a series of up to four treatments, spaced at least three weeks apart. While some side effects like small bumps or lumps may occur, they generally resolve on their own.

The Sculptra Advantage

With the growing popularity of liquid facelifts, the approval of Sculptra marks a significant advancement in anti-aging treatments. Its ability to treat larger facial areas and produce gradual, natural results offers a unique approach to combating facial aging.

Scar Treatment Center in NYC | Dr. Gary Rothfeld at 629 Park Ave

Understanding Scars

A scar is a permanent patch of skin that forms over a wound as your body heals itself after a cut, scrape, burn, or sore. Scars can also result from surgeries, infections like chickenpox, or skin conditions like acne. Typically, scars are thicker, and can appear pinker, redder, or shinier than the surrounding skin.

The appearance of a scar depends on various factors:

  • The size and depth of the wound
  • The location of the scar
  • The healing time
  • Your age
  • Your genetic tendency to scar

Although scars usually fade over time, they never disappear completely. If a scar's appearance bothers you, various treatments can help minimize it. Dr. Gary Rothfeld, a board-certified dermatologist at NYC Dermatology, can evaluate your scar and recommend the best treatment.

Advanced Scar Treatments Offered

Surgical Scar Revision

Surgical scar revision can improve a scar's appearance by altering its size, depth, or color. This technique is particularly effective for wide or long scars, prominent scars, or those healed in a specific pattern. The procedure involves removing the scar and rejoining the skin in a less obvious fashion. Techniques like irregular or staggered incision lines can make scars less noticeable.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion treats acne scars, pockmarks, and minor skin irregularities. A dermatologist uses an electrical machine to remove the top skin layers, providing a more even skin contour. While improvement is visible, dermabrasion cannot completely eliminate scars. Recovery time varies, with minor defects needing a single session and deeper scars requiring multiple sessions.

Laser Resurfacing and Pulsed Dye Laser

Laser scar revision uses high-energy light to remove or remodel damaged skin, improving surgical, acne, chickenpox, and other scars. Patients can usually resume normal activities within a week. Different lasers are available for specific skin defects, such as the pulsed dye laser for flattening raised scars and reducing redness. Acne scars and other indented scars benefit from laser skin resurfacing.

Soft Tissue Fillers

Injectable substances like Juvederm, hyaluronic acid, or fat can elevate indented scars. The amount of material injected depends on the scar's size and firmness. Juvederm injections provide immediate improvement but need to be repeated. Hyaluronic acid injections last up to a year. The dermatologist will help you choose the best filler for your scar.

Punch Grafts and Punch Excisions

Punch grafts involve replacing scarred skin with small pieces of normal skin, usually taken from behind the ear. Punch excisions use stitches to close holes made by a tiny skin punch. These techniques are effective for deep or pitted acne scars, providing a smoother skin surface.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove the top skin layer to smooth depressed scars and even skin color. Light peels require no healing time, while deeper peels can take up to two weeks to heal. The type of peel depends on the scar's depth and color.

Other Scar Treatment Methods

  • Pressure Bandages and Massages: Flatten scars with regular use over several months.
  • Silicone Gels, Creams, and Bandages: Reduce scar thickness and pain with consistent use.
  • Cryosurgery: Freezes upper skin layers to remove excess scar tissue.
  • Cortisone Injections or Tape: Soften firm scars, causing them to shrink and flatten.

Personalized Care with Dr. Gary Rothfeld

Dr. Gary Rothfeld personally evaluates every new patient, ensuring customized treatment plans. He sees every patient himself, without delegating to physician assistants or nurse practitioners. His approach focuses on listening to patients' concerns and providing the highest standard of care.
