Scabies Treatment Center of New York

World-Class Scabies Treatment in NYC

Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. This condition is common worldwide and affects people of all races and social classes. Scabies spreads rapidly in crowded conditions with frequent skin-to-skin contact, such as hospitals, institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes.

Open 7 days a week for treatment, our Scabies NYC Treatment Center is dedicated to providing effective care for those suffering from scabies.

Signs and Symptoms of Scabies Infestation

  • Pimple-like irritations, burrows, or rash on the skin, especially between the fingers, on the wrists, elbows, knees, penis, breasts, or shoulder blades. The scalp is usually not affected.
  • Intense itching, especially at night.
  • Sores caused by scratching, which can become infected with bacteria.

Transmission of Scabies

Scabies spreads through direct, prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an infested person. It is easily transmitted to sexual partners and household members. Sharing clothing, towels, and bedding can also spread scabies.

Risk Factors for Severe Infestation

People with weakened immune systems and the elderly are at higher risk for a severe form of scabies known as Norwegian or crusted scabies.

Lifespan of Mites

Once away from the human body, mites do not survive more than 48-72 hours. On a person, an adult female mite can live for up to a month.

Pet-Related Scabies

Pets have a different type of scabies mite. While these mites can cause temporary itching and irritation in humans, they do not reproduce on human skin and die within a couple of days.

Onset of Symptoms

For a first-time infestation, symptoms may take 4-6 weeks to appear. For those previously infested, symptoms can appear within a few days.

Diagnosis of Scabies

Diagnosis is typically made by examining the burrows or rash. Skin scrapings may be taken to look for mites, eggs, or mite fecal matter. Even if these tests return negative, an infestation may still be present, as there are usually fewer than 10 mites on the entire body.

Treatment of Scabies

Scabies can be treated with various lotions. Treatment involves applying the lotion to the entire body from the neck down and leaving it on overnight. All clothing, bedding, and towels used within two days before treatment should be washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer. A second treatment may be necessary 7-10 days later.

Who Should Be Treated?

Everyone diagnosed with scabies, their sexual partners, and close contacts should be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfestation.

Post-Treatment

Itching may persist for 2-3 weeks after treatment. This does not indicate ongoing infestation. Additional medication may be prescribed to relieve itching. No new burrows or rashes should appear 24-48 hours after effective treatment.
